Following the sudden death of his older brother Joe, Lee Chandler finds himself back in his hometown of Manchester-by-the-Sea, a place that he sought to escape years ago. Lee is shocked to find out that Joe has deemed him the legal guardian of his nephew Patrick, and begrudgingly agrees to stay in Manchester-by-the-Sea until the school year is over for Patrick. Taking up residence in his deceased brother’s home, Lee grapples with his mental health and past trauma that made him leave the town where he was born and raised.
