Girls Act Out tells the story of five highly competitive teenage girls on the verge of their senior year. During one comically premeditated drunken night, Petra, Squish, Claire, Thea, and Alisha are forced to face their differences, their misaligned passions, and the ways in which they relate (or can’t) to one another. Girls Act Out de- and re-constructs narrative storytelling as a study of the ways girls — consciously or not — perform for each other, confronting questions of race, sexuality, class, relationships and the ever-daunting task of growing up.

Taylor Steele (Playwright/Director) is a NYC born and based writer, educator, performer, theater and film-maker. For more information about her work, you can visit her website, taylorsteele.info

Maya Carter (Assistant Director) is an interdisciplinary performer, teaching artist, and theater-maker based out of Brooklyn NY. Their work explores that which dismantles oppressive power structures + amplifies the voices of the marginalized. Their work ignites an abiding hunger for equity + justice within for the world without. Maya is constantly trying to cultivate tenderness while preparing for the revolution; both of which can only happen after a cup of lemon ginger tea. :) Developmental projects include a residency at Manhattan Detention Complex, The Seven Ravens Project with the Soledad Ensemble at the New Victory's LabWorks Program and Untitled Parlor Play: For Home Amusement under the direction of Kyle Metzger and Dina Vovsi. Performances include: The 24-Hour Plays: Nationals, Hedda Gabler with Ophelia Theatre Group; Period Sisters at HERE Arts Center; and Letters In The Dirt at The Brick. Maya is also a frequent collaborator with Poetic Theater Productions. Maya attended Hofstra University, earning a BFA in Theater Performance, and currently teaches theater, creative writing, and stop-motion animation through Stages on the Sound.

hawkhouse (Producer) is a New York City based producing partnership between Emily Hawkins and Allison Houser, working to provide production support to indie theater artists. We are passionate about the art and change-making capability of storytelling, for accessibility and access to theater, and for interdisciplinary collaborations.
