Katia Cardenal: A Concert for Nicaragua

Katia Cardenal — live in concert in New York City for the first time in over 20 years!

One of the most beloved musical artists of Nicaragua, Katia Cardenal was born in 1963. Absorbing the musical influences of her talented family where classical, folk and pop songs were cherished, she began to perform in public with her brother Salvador when she was just 15. As the Duo Guardabarranco, they sang through the revolution, and their gentle, insistent music enchanted Jackson Browne and Holly Near, who helped them record the first of their 12 albums. They toured the world, earning an OTI award and helping to shape the Nueva Canción movement.

Since her brother’s death in 2010, Katia has continued to tour and sing, building her repertoire to include songs with a feminist perspective as well as carying on her brother’s eco-song repertoire, and never leaving behind his most beloved songs honoring the youth who carry freedom’s flame. Katia began a recording company, MOKA DISCOS, started an annual Women’s Songwriter festival at the National Theatre, and released an additional 11 albums, most recently an album of original children’s songs.

We are so excited that Katia is now returning to New York for this long-awaited performance, accompanied by her daughter Nina Cardenal, who can replicate the elegant guitar stylings of her uncle Salvador plus add a youthful energy to their repertoire as her pure soprano blends with her mother’s alto.

Join us for an evening of uplifting songs of compassion, ecology and social justice. Katia’s music reminds us that love and beauty are not only possible but essential for survival.

Here are some samples of Katia and Nina’s music.

Proceeds from this event will support community development and humanitarian projects in Nicaragua.
